  1. Strange mix of the English word ‘Camp’ and and use of the mascuiline ‘el’ gender-specific pronoun for ‘Maria’… or is that really supposed to be one word ‘Elmaria’?

  2. A scary picture. Is this a prison cell? A sort of secret place for unwanted bad guys/girls? And yes, the “El Maria” is puzzling too. What the….?? Maybe El Campo de Playa Maria?? It should read “Campo de fer-de-lance.” –Peg

  3. The entire island used to be a penal colony. The prisoners have only been cleared out in the last few years. This is probably the only reason the island has survived without development in it´s pristine state. The old prison camps are in ruins. Definitly visit if you get the chance.

  4. I’m guessing that it is an abbreviation of ‘El Campamento de Playa Maria.’ So the ‘el’ is indicating ‘campamento’ and not playa or Maria. Why it is in this order, I’m not sure.
