The Time Traveller (for so it will be convenient to speak of him) was expounding a recondite matter to us.

We have 3 kids who have grown up around sailboats...there was never a good solution. One time the USCG wanted to ticket us when we landed in our dinghy at a dock from the anchorage where the mother ship lay... I had our 6 week old in a front pack, head up high around my neck with an XXL PFD around/under the two of us. not an ideal solution but one that worked... well, that left us 1 PFD short of the law. We demonstranted to the nice fellow, who I'm sure didn't have children and hadn't confronted just this situation, that the tiny (she was a wee one!) baby would be in MORE danger in our Mustang infant PFD..."good" for <30 lbs and smallest on the market we could find. She slipped RIGHT out of it. This way, at least we were attached and our heads up!

He eventually agreed. Now I'm just relieved they all fit into PFDs they even *like* to wear.

love the pictures...bare buns on the sand rock. :-)

I have to agree that the whole life-vest thing is really miserable for babies. My kids dealt with the situation by refusing to move and eventually falling asleep. Then I had bulky dead weight to hold. It really didn't become fun on the boat until they could really walk well by themselves. At that point, they could grip the sides of the boat and peer endlessly into the water. My kids are also fascinated by the heads on boats. Go figure...
