The transit fee for boats under 50' is $500, but there are a couple of additional $50 fees added. That is if your boat can make 8 knots under power and you make it through in one day. Southbound is downwind so making it through in a day isn't usually a problem. Most people lie and claim their boats will make 8 knots. This way you only get charged if you're late. If you claim less than 8 knots you are charged an additional $680 up front. If you can't maintain 5 knots under power they will not let you transit.

Hi. I am in the market for a trimaran which will make it to the Philippines. How much did it cost to go through the Panama Canal?

I am interested in hearing more from you if "TIME MACHINE" is still avaliable. She sounds nice. We live just south of Jim Brown's 'roost' on Mobjack Bay (Chesapeak). I have had a sweet, old Maine-built wheelhouse ketch for over twenty years; she is now almost 50 years old and going strong. Wooden with a beautiful sheer. But I want something smaller and have been on Jim Brown's original 31 and liked it alot.

Thanks

Another thing I forgot to talk about was the alcohol stove. The TimeMachine has a 2 burner Origo 3000 alcohol burning stove. Common cruiser wisdom is that you can't get alcohol stove fuel in Mexico or Central America. This simply isn't true. We had no problem finding fuel and it works out to be far easier and less expensive than propane (of course it isn't as hot). If you ask for alcohol stove fuel in a marine store or anywhere else they won't have it and they won't be able to help you. However, high proof alcohol is commonly available in hardware stores and pharmacies. Pharmacies are the best bet, just make sure it is at least 90% (96% is best). We never had to pay more than $8 per gallon which is less than marine stove fuel costs at West Marine.

A few people have asked if I have a current survey. I don't and we don't want to spend the money to get one. Most buyers will probably want to get their own survey anyway for insurance purposes. Back when we were in California we were able to get insurance for just a little over $200 per year through Boat US full coverage at the $30k survey value. I scanned the survey we had done then in case anyone wants to look at it.
